Baptism: Marking Your Commitment to Follow Christ
At First Baptist Church Indian Trail, we believe in marking and celebrating certain spiritual milestones in the lives of people who are seeking God. Baptism is a way of marking the most important decision that a follower of Christ makes. We want you to be informed about the biblical meaning of Baptism, and we also want to come alongside you to celebrate this exciting symbol of spiritual change.
Baptism Info
In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus commands his followers to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit...” Baptism is the means by which disciples of Christ are identified.
Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the
Holy Spirit. It is an act of obedience symbolizing the believer's faith in a crucified, buried, and risen
Saviour, the believer's death to sin, the burial of the old life, and the resurrection to walk in newness of
life in Christ Jesus. It is a testimony to his faith in the final resurrection of the dead.
To sum up, we believe that the Bible makes the following points about Baptism:
• Baptism is an act of obedience to the command of Christ.
-"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” -Matthew 28:19-20
• Baptism symbolizes the spiritual cleansing through divine forgiveness and newness of life experienced by believers by virtue of their identification with Christ in his death and resurrection.
-"Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life."
-Romans 6:3-4
• Baptism provides an opportunity for believers to make a formal profession of their faith before the church.
-And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he was baptized at once, he and all his family. -Acts 16:31-33
